Sometimes one has to search high and low for the ideal opportunity to follow their heart’s desire, and yet sometimes the perfect chance seems to find the person who wants it.
And Angelica Fox, who seemed to attract assignments and schoolwork like a magnet, couldn’t help but wish for an extraordinary opportunity to come in search for her. Something life-changing, something better than what even her imagination could offer her.
She glanced at the grandfather clock in front of her, snapping out of her daydream.
11:59 p.m.
Before she could escape into another fantasy, the clock struck midnight.
A new year had officially begun.
Suddenly, a loud knock sounded from outside the front door.
A musty letter slid under the crack in the door, and she could’ve sworn her heart was urging her to open it.
So she snatched the letter with trembling hands and tore it open, drawing in a quick breath when writing in golden ink gleamed,
Angelica,
Right here is everything you’ve ever wanted,
Run your fingers over these words. You know you want it.
-The Kriptos Society.
Without thinking twice, Angelica ran her fingers over the gleaming letters.
And suddenly everything went black as she was whisked away in a whirlwind of glimmering dust and wishes.
“Where am I?” Angelica demanded.
She blinked, trying to make sense of the fog around her, when a lady wearing a cloak embellished with starlit gemstones stepped out of the shadows.
“Welcome, Angelica Fox,” her husky voice spoke. “I see you have accepted our invitation for I’m here today to offer to you your heart’s desire.”
A gasp escaped Angelica’s mouth.
“Start a better life than you could’ve ever imagined,” the lady said in her low, ethereal voice. “You wanted adventure, and I’m offering you one right here.”
Her enchantingly bejeweled cloak shone. “Well, Angelica, we want you to leave behind everything you have and explore a new world.”
“Leave behind… everything?” Angelica’s hoarse words were barely a whisper.
She would never leave behind everything she had ever experienced, everyone she had ever known.
“No,” she breathed with finality. “I would never, in a million years.”
“Are you sure? Is that truly what you want?”
The lady’s eyes met with hers and Angelica knew – without hesitation – exactly what she wanted.
