The third cup of coffee in the morning usually decided whether his palms would relax or start shaking. Today, the second choice won.

To stretch, Robbie looked at the back of the diner where the restrooms and the payphone were located. A door glinted with reflection, one that he didn't recognize; it was quite narrow and painted dull green. Had that always been there?

“Marj," Robbie called to the waiter, and she turned with her eyebrows raised. "The door back there. What is it?"

Marj glanced once, indifferent, "The storage closet?"

"Since when was there a storage closet?"

"Since forever, " she replied, her eyes already on another customer.

Robbie came off the stool frowning. When he reached the unfamiliar door, his reflection in the brass handle stared, his own face distorted. Then, he pressed the cold knob to his fingers.

There was a corridor of doors, each the same dull shade. Robbie used his elbow to push the closest ajar door, but became motionless at the sight. He saw himself inside, sitting dejectedly at the diner counter with an empty pill bottle. Marj's hands were unsteady beside him as she fumbled to reach a phone.

Robbie jerked away with a turned stomach. He didn’t need to see more.

Surprise made Robbie jump and whirl when a voice behind him said, “You shouldn't be here.”

The voice and the face were his but older by twenty years. How could this be?

Robbie tensed and barely heard the question over his beating heart. The older “him” exhaled through his nose, a sound Robbie recognized. The man gestured down the hallway, where the doors stood across impossible distances. "This is every choice you didn’t make, every path you almost took."

Robbie’s pulse stuttered, glancing at his lifeless body, then quickly away. "That was a choice?"

"Not one you made," older Robbie said, softer now. "But one that was waiting for you. Some doors open whether you turn the handle or not." He reached out as he turned, pulling Robbie’s shoulder to follow in his footsteps. "Come on. You shouldn’t linger."
